This week, Sam, Head of Lender Success here at Fat Lama, had the pleasure of catching up with Eleanor. Eleanor is a Fat Lama user who, as of this week, has generated a record amount of income on the platform without actually renting anything.
‘You what?’ Fair question. Eleanor has been inviting her contacts – friends, family, work contacts and online forums – to sign up with her Fat Lama referral code, and in the last couple of months, twenty-three of them have now rented on the platform. Read her story below.
Hi Eleanor, how’s it going?
Good, thank you. I’ve just got back from a holiday in Scotland – you’ve caught me at a good time!
First of all, how long have you been using Fat Lama?
So I’ve been using the platform since March now – I lend out bits and bobs from my graphic design studio once or twice a week and actually borrowed a gimbal and camera for a project I was working on last month. It’s been cool seeing it grow over the last few months too.
I’ve had at least 50 people sign up with my code now, and 23 of them have now rented on the platform, and I’ve earnt £25 for each of them.
Your lender earnings aren’t your only source of Fat Lama income are they?
That’s right! No, basically, I’ve been sharing my referral code pretty steadily over past month. I think I’ve had at least 50 people sign up with my code now, and 23 of them have now rented on the platform, and I’ve earnt £25 for each of them through the referrals alone. In total, I’ve basically made £575 without lending a thing.
Who have you shared your code with?
I shared it with friends first, but the majority has been through my colleagues, word-of-mouth and by just sharing it online – forums, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, WhatsApp, places like that. Quite a few people had already signed up, but plenty hadn’t, so it made sense.

Was it easy?
Yeah it really didn’t take much. I suppose when you give someone your code, you’re also offering them £25 credit, so it’s not surprising that they get used. This month, it’s actually overtaken my lender income for rentals which is cool.
What are you going to be spending your earnings on?
Some of it was spent on the holiday, actually – the rest of it’ll be rainy-day-money.
Remember, all lenders are able to withdraw their referral credit as cash. That means if you’ve ever lent an item on the platform, the opportunity is available to you. If you haven’t, what are you waiting for?
