These Apps Show You Where It’s Legal And Safe To Fly Your Drone

As a drone pilot it’s important to know where you can and can’t fly your drone. Whether you’re a seasoned drone mapping veteran or are just thinking about taking to the skies, it can be tricky to figure out where’s safe, and legal, to fly a drone.

Some areas are clearly off limits such as airports and military bases. Other aren’t quite as obvious. What if you want to capture the colour of Notting Hill Carnival from above or get a raven’s eye view of the Tower of London? Fortunately, like most things in life, there are now a few apps for that. Here are three we think you should know about. Better still, they’re all free and available on both iOS and Android.

Drone Assist

Drone Assist is the product of a collaboration between the National Air Traffic Control Services and the Civil Aviation Authority. The app provides an interactive map of the UK and its airspace, which is constantly updated to include commercial air traffic. Drone Assist warns users of places where they should avoid flying their drones entirely and places where drone flight should be done cautiously. In addition to this, the app alerts pilots to hazards on the ground which may bring privacy, security, or safety issues.

Drone Assist also has a feature called Fly Now which allows you to show other pilots where you’re flying your drone to help avoid drone incidents or collisions.

UAV Forecast

UAV Forecast is available internationally and gives detailed information of the suitability of an area for flying. Not only does UAV Forecast give live updates of flight restrictions, it also provides users with information on drone no-fly zones, wind speed, visibility, temperature, weather conditions and even solar flare activity. For data enthusiasts, UAV Forecast is the app for you!

Hover

Hover, like UAV Forecast, is available internationally and goes above and beyond many other drone flight apps. It has a range of features in addition to the standard no-fly zone map which make it a great choice for any drone enthusiast. These include a news feed which helps you keep up-to-date on the latest and greatest drone news, a flight logging system which allows teams to coordinate and log multiple drone flights, an easy-to-use flight readiness monitor to help you understand whether it’s safe to begin flying in a specific area, and of course a weather tracker.

So you’ve got the app but now you need a drone. If you’re thinking of taking to the skies why not hire a drone before deciding on which one to buy? Here at Fat Lama we have loads of drones for hire. If you’re looking to try before you buy or to test out different models before you make a decision then drone rental is for you! Or perhaps you’re a seasoned drone veteran and are looking to make some extra money when you’re not using it? If so then it’s definitely time for you to explore drone hire. We have users making hundreds of pounds a month from drone rentals alone and so can you!
