Drone Racing: The Basics

Drone racing is coming to London this summer. Unsurprisingly, not many have heard of drone racing – and even less know exactly what’s involved… What you should know is that London has just held its first drone racing tryouts and this summer, Alexandra Palace will be holding the Drone Racing League (DRL) championships for the first time.

Drone Racing is a new high-speed competitive racing sport. Skilled pilots fly quad-copter drones through three-dimensional courses at speeds of up to 120mph. DRL drones are custom-built for speed, agility, and performance. Pilots steer from the point of view of the drone by wearing First Person View (FPV) goggles that display a live image transmitted by an onboard camera. Flying a drone competitively at high speed in FPV is an intense, immersive experience.

When Did Drone Racing Become A Thing?

Drone racing actually stemmed from RC racing, which used to use FPV monitors and occasionally goggles. Not long after drone racing was introduced (around 2013) it quickly overtook the RC racing scene. Why? Well, drones are much more mobile, agile and can potentially survive crashes and accidents – enough to make it the favoured sport! FPV goggles have become the norm, since they provide a much more immersive experience for the pilot. The drones used for drone racing also look a lot different from the camera drones we’re used to seeing. They’re smaller, shaped more like a domino piece with propellers attached – pretty minimalist.
