Presents Are So Last Christmas

Still Short on Christmas gift ideas? Give experience packages to your loved ones instead.

Science says that experiences will make you happier, and who are we to argue? We’ve curated a list of some of the best DIY experiences available on Fat Lama, which you could be giving to your nearest and dearest this Christmas.

#1 Home Cinema Night

This beats a trip to the cinema every time. You curate the listings, the audience, the location and the menu and there are no people talking or rustling packets of Butterkist in the row behind…

You will need:

  1. A Projector
  2. A Screen
  3. Speakers
  4. Your favourite film
  5. Popcorn

#2 DIY Photo Shoot

This one’s a little cheesy, but it’s a surefire win with your mum. Get the family together and create memories which you’ll keep for life.

You will need:

  1. A Camera
  2. A Lighting Rig
  3. Backdrop
  4. Fancy Dress (optional)

#3 Aerial Tour of London

Drones are not only the greatest toy for adults currently in existence, but they’re also a shortcut to see the sights of London in all their 4K beauty.

You will need:

  1. A Drone
  2. Your Smartphone
  3. A London Guide Book

Experiences make us happier than things.

It’s a logical assumption that receiving physical gifts which last over time would make us happier than access to one-off events. But recent research by San Francisco State University suggests that such logic is misguided. The consumers they asked said that life experiences not only made them happier, but were a better use of money. As a general rule, trips to the cinema, the theatre, galleries and gigs generate memories which we cherish for longer than we savour physical purchases. Something to consider as you trawl Amazon for wash kits and candles in the run up to Christmas…
